Good vacation spot in Mexico for wife and I?
briancarldrab asked:
I saw and read several other questions “related” to this but it didn’t really address what I’m looking for. My wife and I love to go on vacation, relax in the sun, watch shows or be entertained, and get dressed up and go to very classy resaurants. We never get to do this at home so this is what we look for on a vacation. We have been to Vegas several times…I love it but was thinking Mexico. Any ideas of a location? Thank you!!

You sound like classy folks, Cabo San Lucas is the only place in Mexico for classy people.

I would shy away from Cancun as a couples vacation. Also, there is some sort of trouble brewing politically in Acapulco from what I’ve heard on the news (the police have had all of their weapons taken away and replaced with slingshots - seriously). Check out Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen. Those are both EXCELLENT vacation destinations for couples, I know this from experience. Good luck, and don’t forget you are now required to have a passport for travel between the US & Mexico.

You may want to skip Mexico this year. They’re having an outbreak of very virulent dengue fever.
The only places that are kept safe are also the overly tacky tourist areas like Cozumel and Cancun.

Yeah, man! It is so CHEAP. 15 bucks to us is a hundred bucks to them. Go expore aztec areas, near Cali! They have lots of fancy restraunts, but dont be a prude, mexicans hate that. Be kind to them, they are jealous of are country and hate us for our privalige. Dont leave the hotel after 9. when my grandparents went, the tour guides said not to cause it is dangerous.

I highly recommend Playa Del Carmen (Mayan Riveria). In fact my husband and I are heading there next week. Lots to do and great place to relax and have fun. Check out tripadvisor.com, the info at this site will help you greatly.

I suggest you check out Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa. Zihua (Zi-hoo-a) is a fishing village and Ixtapa is a small resort area about 5 miles away. It is located on the Pacific Coast. Beautiful weather Oct - March and not the horrible crowds like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta (also cleaner than Puerto Vallarta). You can often find great charter flights from the midwest and great flights on Alaska, Northwest, Continental from LAX, Houston, etc.
If you like even warmer weather, check out Huatulco. I have not been here but have been researching it. Very quiet, quaint, yet offers the great restaurants and things to do.
If you want the real touristy areas then go to Acapulco, Cancun / Playa Del Carmen, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta.
I think some of your decision factors should be
1) Where are you coming from? That can narrow down destinations and airlines and deals
2) What time of year are you travelling? Mexico is large, and if you are traveling in late August (very hot/humid in Cancun) then you may want to look at Los Cabos (La Paz nearby).
Don’t listen to the lady talking about dengue. Yes some parts of Mexico have it, but there isn’t a wide spread outbreak that travellers should fear. If there was, the CDC or the US Dept of Travel would have sent out a travel advisory, which they do not have. The person talking about slingshots has it all wrong. For a short time in January the police in Tijuana had slingshots. That is a lawless border town that no one would vacation in and everyone knows they have problems, but that was NOT Acapulco. Also don’t listen to the other lady about not traveling after 9pm. That is hogwash! My god, people are saying so many false things about Mexico. It is all about how safe you are and what situations you put yourself in (e.g. if you go on the street asking for drugs you are asking for problems. If you are a normal traveler enjoying the area, you will have no problems). The only thing with Mexico is you should not drive at night, because there are bandits on some of the roads.

Well to me Vegas is not classy. It can be entertaining if that is the kind of entertainment you like.
But a classy place with good restaurants in Mexico is:-
San Miguel de Allende, in the State of Guanajuato. It is 6500 feet high in the mountains, cool in the morning and night, and hot in the day. There are at least 4 theatres, 3 English speaking, wonderful drives out to hotsprings, chapels with all kinds of decorations, parades that are very special. Art galleries, botanical gardens, esp. of every type of Cactus.
Golf, horse riding, bird sanctuary and salsa dancing.
You take a flight from Dallas, or Huston, or San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, to Leon the International Guanajuato airport, and then a shuttle therefrom to San Miguel, takes one and quarter hours from Leon to San Miguel right to the door of your hotel or B&B. May is the hot humid month and it can also rain a lot in June, so skip those months. This is a Historical Jewel of a town in Mexico, all the houses in the center are Colonial, the streets are cobbled, and it is very romantic. Bring good walking shoes. Windjammer, shawl, slacks, and a dressup dress/shoes. You will be entranced.

Mexico has beautiful upscale beaches like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta or Cancun or, even better, Playa del Carmen.
Acapulco has definitely classy restaurants and night life, but the water isn“t as clean.

I recommend this place. It’s close to Playa Del Carmen (about 1 hour and some minutes away from Cancun). You’ll see people from Spain, France, Italy, U.S. Very beautiful with different things to do. Just don’t budge into buying a condo or something like that. We didn’t even had to leave the hotel.
