What is a great destination for a family vacation?

It can be in or out of the US, but can’t be ridiculously expensive for airfare ($1000’s of dollars in transportation per person is not reasonable) We have been to Maui and Riviera Maya. We are looking for a place that isn’t too touristy, but still has plenty to do.

If you have any recommendations, they would be greatly appreciated! Even if the destination you suggest is not tropical, we are open to other ideas!
