What’s the difference between sick days & vacation days?

I’m a recent graduate and am working my first job. My employer gives me 10 vacation days and 10 sick days — What is the difference? I know vacation days are planned, but what about sick days. Couldn’t I just fake a sickness? Or are they treated like vacation days.
